I'm just sayin'...

i do believe that article is listed under restaurant gossip.

if there had been a quote from stumptown confirming their move, it wouldn't be gossip.

then why post it here? I thought this was an industry BB, not a gossip BB.

I'm not trying to blast anyone, I'm just asking an honest question.

This brings up a different question, does it seem like there is a gap that needs to be filled in Seattle? I mean, who's carrying the torch in Seattle, other than Victrola (which I've been secretly boycotting since the Tonxodus.

It is not an either/or, and it is possibly neither.

coffeed.com "for professionals and fanatics."

as far as I know that is all this board claims to be.

But are those shops passionate about origin coffee and consumer education?

I'd argue no.

i'll just start with the first one on michael's list. this always reminds me of a great effort for customer education and passion about origin coffee. also the fact that zoka offers 16 single origin coffees on their website compared to victrola's 7. not to mention how much time zoka people spend at origin judging competitions and building relationships.

i'm interested in hearing your argument for how that isn't a dedication to origin coffee, and also more of your reasoning behind boycotting the only company you feel does a good job in seattle. was tonx the only force in victrola's dedication, and has their quality and dedication wavered at all since he left?

Allow me to rephrase, passion for origin, consumer education and in cafe experience. Espresso included.

Oh yea, the secret boycott was a joke. I'm not actually "boycotting" Victrola.

I think Victrola is still doing a great job, and Zoka just keeps getting better. Also, the folks at Batdorf are doing nice work...

Yes, Victrola does do a great job! And as Strumpfie points out, they just have 7 origins...but I think that's pretty cool. Do it any way you wanna, as far as I'm concerned!
Weird thing is that Victrola and Zoka seem to be the only ones in Seattle really really trying to make a case for specific farms and origins.
I do think that Stumptown is in Seattle now....last time I saw Joel Pollock he was wearing a Cupcake Royal t-shirt (despite the fact that I had given him a perfectly good see-through girls tennis tee earlier).
We hear they are on the move, and that's all good for the effort!

Ahem...

Stumptown touches down at 12th & Pike in June

I'm assuming this is in the bottom of the new "lofts" development on the corner?

I'm blown away... so ballsy-- 1.5 blocks from Vita, 0.5mi from Vivace, 0.8mi from Victrola. Welcome to the jungle, indeed.

I would have expected nothing less. When can we get a construction tour?

Does... not... compute...

Two locations within 1/3 mile of each other? Or is 12th & Pike the roaster while Boylston & Pine is the shop?

What is the Boylston & Pine shop taking over? Options appear to be Hot Mamas pizza, pawn shop, hot dance club or dirt-leg quick shop.

Dying for details...

Having two locations 1/3 mile apart (or less) is not necessarily a duplication in some locations and markets. The folks I work for part time have two stores that are about 1/4 mile apart. There are a handful of customers that stop into both stores depending on where they happen to be at a given point in the day but at least 90% or more of each store's customer base is unique to that store. And most wouldn't necessarily trek over to the other location if the one they frequent did not exist. And his town has far fewer good coffee options than does Seattle (an extreme understatement).

It's not the distance that has me scratching my head. I understand the economics of placing (2) shops diagonally across the very same intersection quite well.

I'm more curious about "is Seattle getting (2) retail stumptown locations in June or (1) roasting location and (1) retail location?"

And I'm curious about why these first two eggs are going into what I feel is one particularly-spro-soaked basket?

At the end of the day I just want the same scoop that all the newsies seem to be getting.

Cheers!

We did something similar with our downtown stores. In downtown Chicago it's two COMPLETELY different crowds, yet you can walk from one to the other. In either of our cases it's not two Starbucks right across the street from one another.

Went to a cupping today at the temporary Stumptown Seattle training facility (Linea, GB/5, Synesso all up and running). One of the absolute most fabulous times I've had in years.

Anyway, there will be two retail locations. One will be at the (now former) location of Aurafice Internet Cafe at 616 E Pine Street. The other will be by the also-opening-soon Cafe Presse (Le Pichet's casual wine and coffee space serving Vita) on 12th.

What's really going to be fun is the wholesale impact of Stumptown in Seattle. We are going to have yet another champion of training, quality, freshness, and public awareness/understanding/education/appreciation.

There can never be too much great coffee.

Damn you Duane.

Just when I thought I didn't have any room left in my heart for an additional Seatown coffee shop, you completely floored me.

Having the chance to meet a few of your incredibly thoughtful, fiercely dedicated, and tear-inducingly artistic people last night I can't wait for The Stumptown to open.

ps. Autumn, you rocked me. I don't pretend to understand the mechanics of your film craft, I only know how my feelings flowed during the show. Thank you.
