I've heard a lot of concerns about this, but really don't his accomplishments speak for themselves?

Matt won the US nationals. Even if he's not 'on the bar' with any regularity the guy is our best.

wanna know how much I wanna respond to this? i'm having dinner this second with the alleged "internet guy."

Matt was a full-time bar barista for a year and a half, before joining the Intelly training team another year, before becoming the graphic designer... all the while continuing to "do coffee" and train for competition.

I plan to record the audio of the finals (every competitor) for the pf podcast. stay tuned!

In regards to Matt being an internet guy, if he is I'd love to see your barista's, as he performed perfectly today, and is a perfect ambassador for your association, and your country. Can't believe how disrespectful that is towards the USBC champion who has placed in the finals

I would say that making a distinction or differentiating between a wage earning barista, and a dedicated training/competition barista is no disrespect to either. Kudos to any and all who excel in their particular niche or domain. Well done to all 6 finalists.

Holy shit, talk about a tough crowd!! Perhaps I should have put a smiley winkey face after the sentence?

As in:

Is riddle actually an 'on the bar' barista, or just an internet guy?

The point was, does he still work on the bar?

Ya konw Geir, I like your attitude. I've known Sammy for most of my coffee career, and it's rought cause I have conflicting interests. I want Sammy to win because he's a personal friend, but I want Matt to win for obvious reasons.

So, here's the solution... Go North America!!!

Funny, it's the opposite for me; Vancouver's closer to my heart than Chicago (being only 60 miles away or so), but Matt Riddle is personally responsible for fostering much of my newbie-coffee-lust when I was just a wee new-hire.

But yeah, w00t for the North America cheer! 'Sides, this close to the border it's all the same anyway. ;)

this would make the first time that either the u.s. or the u.k. has made the finals, no? (at least in the, er, 'modern era.')

cheers to both of 'em.

Steve, FYI, "JimmyO" is a Canadian... just wanted to make sure you knew, cuz with all of the drama of the recent weeks, don't need any more "US vs. US" sort of talk.

I think Hoffman could grab 1st, though I do think, (with respect) it sounds like Klaus is the one to beat. Then again, I hear Sweden was excellent and that Sammy is just ridiculously polished. (I haven't seen or heard much about Riddle sorry)But sure,at the end of the day, aren't they all winners. :?

How lucky to be those judges though, and know that you're about to taste some of the best espresso ever made. I can assume that much yeah?

What time will we know?

James was simply awesome today.

Out of all the competitors, he was the one with the "this is just a cool day to be alive" look in his face while competiting. After he was done, he said to me "this is one of the greatest days of my life".

Awesome guy. I have some audio of him.
