2009 CoE schedule

Postby )on on Mon Feb 23, 2009 11:25 am

Thought I'd resurrect this category out of dormancy. Although I'm pretty aware and sensitive to criticisms of the program, it's hard for me not to be excited about its potential now that I'm directly involved.

Here's the international-juried competition schedule for CoE's 10th year:

March 9-13 - Colombia [auction, April 23]

April 27-May 1 - El Salvador [auction, June 4]

May 4-8 - Costa Rica [auction, June 1]

May 11-15 - Honduras [auction, June 23]

May 18-22 - Nicaragua [auction, July 2]

May 27-June 1 - Guatemala [auction, July 8]

August 24-28 - Rwanda [auction, October 22]

October 5-9 - Bolivia [auction, November 19]

November 9-13 - Brazil [auction, January 19, 2010]

Colombia's pre-screening is complete, the national jury cups next week and a team of esteemed international cuppers will convene on Pereira in a couple weeks.

The competition in Nicaragua will be CoE's 50th milestone event: all-star jury, fanfare, the works.

I'm happy to talk about CoE here or in private emails. And I hope to share the excitement as each country's competition and auction unfolds.

we do. COE rocks. We have gotten so many great coffees and made a lot of relationships from it! It is an awesome program. The size requirements are a bit large now at 38 quintales which limits many small farms but the standards are awesome.

can't wait to see what you can do to kick it up Jon! Rock it! :D

according to virmax, most regions in colombia do have two harvests per year: a main crop and a smaller one (fly-crop). first semester harvest usually begins in april and ends in july; second semester harvest usually begins in september and ends in december. the crop cycle can be inverted due to its geographical location. e.g., the main crop in nariño is typically during the first semester while in quindio it is during the second semester.

How does that impact which crops get submitted to the Colombia COE?

Since 2007: if in year 1 CoE does the June crop, year 2 will be the November crop, year 3 will be back at the June crop, year 4 will be back at the November crop, and so forth; I believe. As both crops can be great, maybe in the future CoE will do both crops every year.

Peter's right. In 05 & 06, Colombia had 2 CoE competitions and auctions but felt that they weren't getting the prices they wanted, so they decided to host one event per year - alternating between harvests.

The international jury convenes in Pereira next week - see facebook event - and that will be all the Colombia CoE available until fall of 2010.

Get it while it's good.

Seeing this thread makes me happy. Thanks, )on.

I hope more CoE info sharing comes back into style. (did it ever go out of style?)

I have to say El Salvador shares the excitement, and commitment to excemplalry coffees! let's keep bringing CoE on!

If you ever come to El Salvador's CoE award ceremony, you'll know what I'm talikg about: the ceremony is a huge thing, it's like a beauty pageant, where you can see the farmer's pride as he goes up and receives his diploma as one of the strong willed people who achieved one of the beautifullest lots of salvadoran coffee that year!!!

I'm happy to be able to see that face.
