Bourbón and Bourbon

I was tired of hearing people get excited (jokingly and not) about having bourbon in their coffee. Some were honestly concerned, others thought it was a tasting note.

The addition of the dialectic mark to our menus has brought many questions about coffee varietals. It seems to inspire the uninitiated to ask: "hey, what's this?".

I've noticed that a few roasters use the accent. I like it and I'm keeping it. Similar experiences?

Hey Jim - Sounds good but I am not sure it is correct. There is an accent in Spanish, not English or French, but that would be spelled "Borbón" not Bourbón. Correct me if I 'm wrong... Tom

I recall first seeing the accented spelling being used by Counter Culture several years ago, though they seem to have since abandoned it.

A quick Google search for "Bourbón" coffee shows use by CoE, 49th Parallel, Tim Wendelboe, Barefoot, many others...

Anyway, I think phonetically it is what we want to communicate, not "Burr-bun" but "Bore-Bone" with emphasis on the second syllable. How about just writing BoreBone on the menu? That will get the ball rolling with customers...

I've been pronouncing it closer to "boor-bon" with the emphasis on second syllable and the "boor" sounding a bit more like "buor" than "boor".

I've heard it both ways from knowledgeable people.

I can't believe it makes a whole lot of difference.
